A Walk across Ericeira II

The Fountains in Ericeira
The locality where ancient Ericeira was built, was not only chosen because of the shelter of its natural harbor, but also because of the richness in water of this area, which is located between two small rivers (Calvo and Fundos).

Agriculture was easy due to the fertile soil, watered by fountains, spread out between the two rivers.

The fishermen's village of Ericeira with its ancestral uses and customs offers the pleasure of the sea, tranquillity and a relaxing ambience.
Ericeira is an old village full of history and of fountains, bearing witness of its ancient foundation, they all have their beautiful details and you will like to discover them at the bend of the streets.

1/ Departure from Largo dos Navegantes.

2/ Rua do Ericeira Foutain :
This fountain located in and named after the Rua do Ericeira has been constructed in 1926. At that time, it was necessary to build new fountains, as already 6000 people visited Ericeira in summer. It consists of two mouths and a marble tank.

3/ Moon Fountain :
The Moon Fountain is supposed to be the oldest in Ericeira, its location is in the area of the very first settlement of this fisherman village. It's aspect, very degenerated by time, suffered even more after the construction of a building just over the fountain

4/
Rua do Norte Fountain :
This fountain located in and named after Rua do Norte was constructed in 1928, because of the lack of water in the residential quarter called "Fontainhas". It remained very well conserved, and besides not being of use for the population anymore, it still serves Ericeira turning the whole square into a beautiful zone.

5/ São Sebastião Fountain :
São Sebastião Fountain is located in the north of Ericeira at the end of the stairway leading down to São Sebastião beach. It probably was constructed at the same time as São Sebastião chapel, which already existed in the 17th century.

6/ Rego Fountain :
Rego Fountain was built in 1803. In 1920 a public washroom was added. In 1960, the garden where it was located and the fountain itself unfortunately were destroyed and later replaced by the actual public washroom

7/ Dolphin Fountain :
The Dolphin Fountain, near the market, was built in 1924, resolving the demand of Ericeira's population for water supply. At this time Ericeira could mainly count with two fountains: Cape Fountain and Rego Fountain. The other existing fountains were of less importance or too far away for most of the population.

8/ Cape Fountain :
Besides the construction of Cape Fountain in its actual dimension dates from the 15th century, it contains a stone slab with gothic characters, which seem to say it had been constructed in 1457.
The tour ends here. Just around the corner the esplanades at the Praça dos Navegantes invite to have a little rest and some refreshments.
